Marrakech travel guide: what to see and how long to stay

Three nights is the sweet spot for most visitors. Here is what is worth your time, how to pace it, and the practical tips that save stress.

Marrakech — the Red City of souks, palaces and gardens — is where most UK visitors start their Moroccan trip. It is intense, beautiful and tiring in equal measure. The trick is to pace it: a few big moments, plenty of slow ones, and a plan for the heat and the crowds.

How long to stay

Our planning data suggests three nights as the ideal stay, with two as a sensible minimum and up to six if you want day trips and a slower rhythm. Two nights lets you see the essentials; three gives you a spare half-day to rest, which matters in hot weather; more than that is best spent on excursions to the Atlas or the coast. The essentials

  • Jemaa el-Fna at dusk. The great square transforms in the evening into an open-air food market with musicians and storytellers. Go around sunset and stay for an hour or two; keep valuables secure.
  • The souks with a guide. A guided morning walk (about three hours) makes the maze understandable and helps you shop with confidence. The FCDO warns about unofficial guides who approach visitors, so arrange a guide through your accommodation or a reputable operator.
  • Bahia Palace — a quick, beautiful visit (about an hour and a half); go early before tour groups.
  • Jardin Majorelle and the YSL Museum. A calm, colourful garden. Tickets are timed and sell out, so book online in advance. Our planning estimate for the combined visit is about £22 per person.
  • Ben Youssef Madrasa and Le Jardin Secret — shorter afternoon visits that add architecture and quiet.

Slow down: hammam, cooking class, rooftop dinner

A traditional hammam with a black-soap scrub is a good afternoon plan, particularly after a hot morning. A Moroccan cooking class (around four hours) teaches you dishes you can repeat at home — a national dish worth trying is tangia, beef slow-cooked in the embers of a hammam fire. Finish with dinner on a medina rooftop.

Day trips from Marrakech

  • Agafay Desert at sunset — a stony desert a short drive from the city, popular for sunset and dinner. It is not the Sahara, but it is an easy taste of open space.
  • Guided hike through Berber villages in the Atlas — about an hour and a half from Marrakech. Trekking needs proper footwear, water and a guide; the FCDO advises insurance that covers hiking.
  • Sunrise hot-air balloon — a highlight for some travellers, but pricier: our planning estimate starts at roughly £150 per person.
  • Essaouira — about three hours away; better as an overnight stay than a day trip.

Where to base yourself

Most visitors stay in the medina in a riad (a traditional courtyard house) for atmosphere; the trade-off is narrow lanes, noise at night and luggage you may need to wheel or carry from the nearest drop-off point. The newer district of Guéliz and hotels outside the walls are quieter and easier for taxis. Ask your accommodation how to reach it from the taxi drop-off.

Practical tips

  • Taxis: agree the fare before you get in, or ask for the meter in petits taxis.
  • Heat: in summer, sightsee early and in the evening. See the best time to visit.
  • Shopping: prices are negotiable in the souks; decide what you are willing to pay, stay polite and be ready to walk away. Cash helps — see money and payments.
  • Dress and behaviour: covering shoulders and knees is appreciated in the medina and at religious sites; ask before photographing people.
  • Petty crime: the FCDO notes pickpocketing and bag-snatching in busy medinas — keep bags zipped and phones out of back pockets.
